I meant to have this up last week, but I got remarkably sidetracked. At any rate, I'd like to take some time to reflect on the awesomeness that was the Midwest...I'm not going to say the entire title, but ya know, that conference.

I don't know about anybody else, but I had a blast. It was so awesome to be in a room with so many like-minded people. Even though I'm "just" an ally, it felt like I was at home. The entire experience was definitely worthwhile in my opinion, and I can't wait for next year's conference.

One of my favorite parts of the conference was a workshop I attended about being an ally. It was interesting to hear what members of the GLBT community thought about allies. It was also nice to interact with other allies. The workshop gave me a lot to think about. For example, some allies worry about "overstepping their bounds" because it's technically not their fight. And some GLBT people agreed that they didn't want allies to "take over." I'd never really thought about like this. I mean, as far as I can tell, this fight is everyone's fight because it's not just about GLBT rights, it's about human rights (though this could just be because I'm the crusading type ;-P). What do you guys think? Thoughts?

One Ally's Perspective...

So when we started the Spectrum blog last year, I think some of us had high hopes for what would come of it, but nobody really knew how to go about getting there. As an exec board, we've discussed everybody having our own segment of Spectrum from Taylor's Tidbits to Joey's Fashion...Focus?...I don't know if that one actually has a name yet. At any rate, I figured that since I'm a writer of sorts, I could utilize the blog, especially since it hadn't been updated since October.

So here it is, I'm going to be writing things as I see them from my perspective as an ally navigating through the world of gay :). I don't mean to speak for all allies, of course. I just want to get my thoughts out there, and hopefully others (especially my fellow allies) will join in with thoughts and comments. I'm hoping to make a post at least once a week, sometimes even more if I really get going. Look for something later today or in the next couple days.

Welcome!

Thank you for stopping by to learn more about Spectrum here at Ball State University.
